Johnny Guitar: A Film that Transcends Time

In 1954, a film was released that defied expectations and became an instant classic. That film was Johnny Guitar, a western with a unique blend of drama, romance, and suspense. Starring Joan Crawford as Vienna, the owner of a saloon in a small western town and Sterling Hayden as Johnny Guitar, a guitar-playing gunslinger who comes into town at just the right moment to protect her. The film was directed by Nicholas Ray, who also directed Rebel Without A Cause.

The storyline of Johnny Guitar is one that has been replicated in countless westerns over the years: a small town is being threatened by a wealthy landowner who wants to take their land by any means necessary. But what sets Johnny Guitar apart from other films of its kind is its emphasis on strong female characters and the tension between them.

Vienna is not your traditional damsel in distress. She is smart, confident and independent – possibly too independent for her time – and refuses to bow down to the men who want to see her fail. Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge), on the other hand, is the traditional feminine ideal for this era – obedient, beautiful but harmless wife of one of the townspeople who becomes increasingly jealous of Vienna.

One of my favourite scenes in Johnny Guitar takes place early in the film when Emma corners Vienna in her saloon with a posse of men behind her demanding Vienna leave town. Emma tells Vienna she’s making the men uncomfortable because she’s too powerful and asks how it feels to be “the only man” around here. To which Vienna responds with one of cinema’s most iconic lines: “I’m not exactly selling pencils around here.”

Johnny Guitar also features some stunning cinematography work by Harry Stradling Jr., which adds to the already tense atmosphere present throughout the entire film. The score composed by Victor Young is memorable as well, with haunting guitar melodies that capture the tension between Vienna and Johnny.

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its initial release, Johnny Guitar has become a cult classic over the years. Many believe it was ahead of its time, with its strong female characters and the non-traditional relationships they have with the male characters. Additionally, the film’s themes of greed, power, and manipulation are just as relevant today as they were in 1954.

The film has also been praised for its subtle commentary on McCarthyism, which was rampant in Hollywood at that time. Some believe that Emma Small’s character represents those who were accusing others of being communists without any evidence or reason.

Johnny Guitar also had an impact on pop culture over the years, with references to the film appearing in numerous TV shows and movies. The most notable example being Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol 2 which features a scene where Uma Thurman’s character watches a scene from Johnny Guitar before going into battle.

One of the reasons Johnny Guitar has stood the test of time is undoubtedly due to the performances of its talented cast. Joan Crawford delivers a compelling performance as Vienna and Sterling Hayden is broodingly charismatic as Johnny. Mercedes McCambridge is equally fantastic as Emma Small.

In conclusion, while Johnny Guitar may have received mixed reviews upon release, it has since become a fan favourite due to its memorable performances, iconic lines, stunning cinematography and unique blend of genres. It’s no wonder that after almost 70 years since its release this film continues to captivate audiences worldwide today – proving once again how impactful it is when a story transcends time with captivating characters that you simply cannot forget long after watching it.
