Pools: A New Kind of Coming of Age Story

Have you ever found yourself staring into a pool, gazing at the shimmering water and thinking about what lies beneath the surface? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s this very idea that serves as the catalyst for the new film Pools, directed by Ava DuVernay.

The film tells the story of two teens from different worlds who find themselves drawn together by their love of swimming. But as they navigate their way through life and all its challenges, they soon discover that the depths of a pool are nothing compared to the depths of their own emotions.

The cast is led by newcomer Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) and rising star Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), who both deliver outstanding performances as Kate and Jamal. The chemistry between these two young actors is electrifying, drawing viewers in and keeping them engaged from start to finish.

However, Pools is not just a love story – it’s also a powerful commentary on race relations in America. The film tackles issues such as police brutality and racial profiling head-on, never shying away from the uncomfortable truths that exist in our society.

At one point in the film, Jamal turns to Kate and says “You know how there are all these black kids who don’t know how to swim? It’s because they’re afraid of being pulled under.” This line packs a powerful punch and serves as a reminder of how systemic racism affects even the seemingly innocent act of swimming.

But despite these heavy themes, Pools manages to maintain a sense of hope throughout. DuVernay employs stunning cinematography to capture both the beauty and danger inherent in water. Every shot seems carefully crafted to serve a purpose – whether it’s highlighting Jamal’s fear as he tries to swim across a lake or emphasizing Kate’s freestyle stroke during a pivotal moment.

Of course, Pools is not without its flaws. Some critics have argued that the film tries to tackle too many issues at once, resulting in a somewhat disjointed plot. And while the chemistry between Hawke and Jerome is undeniable, some have suggested that the supporting characters could have been given more depth.

But despite these criticisms, it’s clear that Pools is a film worth watching. From its stunning visuals to its thought-provoking commentary on race and class, there’s something here for everyone. As Jamal says in one of the film’s most memorable scenes, “We’re all just trying to keep our heads above water.” And in a world as tumultuous as ours, isn’t that something we can all relate to?
