Review
When it comes to movies, I’ve always had a soft spot for those that take unexpected turns and leave me feeling surprised. That’s exactly what happened when I saw the movie Flower, a film that is as entertaining as it is charming.
The story follows a 17-year-old girl named Erica (played by Zoey Deutch), who deals with her difficult life by blackmailing men who cheat on their wives. Erica’s life gets thrown upside down when her mother’s new boyfriend moves in with them. The boyfriend, Bob (played by Tim Heidecker), has just been released from prison and seems to be on the straight and narrow. However, Erica suspects he may be a pedophile and sets out to prove it.
At first glance, Flower might seem like a standard teen drama but it’s so much more than that. The movie tackles some heavy themes such as abuse, mental illness, and pedophilia in a way that doesn’t feel heavy-handed or preachy.
One of my favorite things about this movie is the dynamic between the characters. Erica is an incredibly complex character who is both likable and unlikable at the same time. She has moments where she does genuinely good things but then turns around and does something awful.
The supporting cast is also fantastic. Adam Scott plays a cop who becomes involved with Erica’s investigation into Bob and his performance is superb. He adds just the right amount of humor to balance out some of the darker moments in the film.
The writing in Flower is sharp and clever, filled with witty dialogue that feels natural rather than forced. The movie also has an excellent score that perfectly complements the tone of each scene.
As for the cinematography, it’s not groundbreaking but it doesn’t need to be. The focus here is on character development and story rather than flashy visuals.
Flower was written by Alex McAulay and directed by Max Winkler (son of the legendary Henry Winkler). It premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and was met with positive reviews.
The film was controversial, with some critics calling it morally questionable or even exploitative. However, I think that’s missing the point. Flower is a satire that uses dark humor to explore serious issues. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics and instead confronts them head-on in a way that feels refreshingly honest.
In the end, Flower is a movie that will stick with you long after the credits roll. It challenges your preconceived notions about morality and forces you to consider uncomfortable truths. If you’re looking for something different and thought-provoking, I highly recommend checking out this little gem of a film.
