Review

Oh, what a tangled web we weave in “Inherent Vice”, a film that unfolds with the frenzied energy of a wild fever dream. This movie is a whimsical take on the wild world of private investigation and government corruption, set in 1970s Los Angeles. Director Paul Thomas Anderson adapts Thomas Pynchon’s novel into a swirling blend of nostalgia and absurdity, with characters and dialogue that might have been lifted straight out of a William Shakespeare play.

The storyline is ingenious, weaving together so many different strands of Los Angeles history that it’s hard to keep up. The story starts with Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix), who is a private investigator living in Los Angeles during the late 1960s. Doc is approached by his ex-girlfriend Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) who wants him to help her with her current lover, high-profile real estate developer Mickey Wolfmann (Eric Roberts). Shasta also desires Doc’s help in protecting Wolfmann from an aggressive gang known as The Golden Fang.

As Doc sets out to solve the case, he encounters all kinds of eccentric characters – from LAPD detective Christian F. “Bigfoot” Bjornsen (Josh Brolin), to junkie saxophone player Coy Harlingen (Owen Wilson), to massage parlor owner Jade (Hong Chau). Each adds their own unique flavor to this intoxicating brew.

If there’s one thing that makes “Inherent Vice” stand out, it’s the cast. Joaquin Phoenix delivers another outstanding performance as Doc Sportello, walking through nearly every scene in a hazy cloud of marijuana smoke. He effortlessly captures Doc’s laid-back nature while still managing to bring depth and authority to his character.

The acting throughout the entire movie is superb. Josh Brolin brings an intensity to his role as Bigfoot Bjornsen, portraying him as a cop who’s tough but also conflicted. Owen Wilson is wonderfully absurd as Coy Harlingen, the junkie sax player with a heart of gold. Katherine Waterston is magnetic in her role as Shasta Fay Hepworth, bringing an otherworldly quality to the character.

The cinematography is another standout aspect of this film. Paul Thomas Anderson and his crew create a beautiful, hazy world where everything seems just out of reach. Everything from the costumes to the locations captures the groovy vibe of Los Angeles in the 1970s.

The score for “Inherent Vice” is also memorable, featuring songs from artists like Neil Young and The Rolling Stones. Each song perfectly captures the mood of the scene it accompanies, creating an atmosphere that’s both dreamy and surreal.

One of the best things about “Inherent Vice” is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. While some moments are serious and introspective, much of the film is playful and absurd, with characters spouting off ridiculous lines like “I’m not gonna try to classify you like some sorta vegetable.”

Some critics have criticized “Inherent Vice” for its sprawling plot and dizzying pace, but I found these aspects to be part of its charm. This movie isn’t meant to be easily digestible – it’s a wild ride that demands your full attention.

Overall, “Inherent Vice” is an exuberant spectacle that pays homage to Hollywood’s past while also creating something entirely fresh and new. It’s a film that shouldn’t be missed by fans of clever storytelling, beautifully shot films, or just those who want to get lost in a trippy world for a few hours!
