Daring to Love: The Inspiring Story of “Loveland”

I’m a big fan of movies that move me, that challenge me, that inspire me to be a better human being. That’s why I was drawn to “Loveland”, a film directed by Jonny Walls and written by Michaelbrent Collings, which explores the power and beauty of love in the face of fear and prejudice.

The story centers on two young lovers, Janie (Kristin Lauria) and Bryce (Steven Stgelais), who defy the norms of their small town in Colorado by pursuing their romance despite the disapproval of Janie’s conservative father (Michael Resendez). Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including a group of bullies who target Bryce because he’s gay, a nosy reporter (Sophia Popovits) who tries to exploit their story for her own gain, and an escalating tension between the locals and a new immigrant community.

At its core, “Loveland” is a movie about courage. It takes courage to stand up for what you believe in. It takes courage to love someone who isn’t like you. It takes courage to face your own prejudices and fears. And it takes courage to trust that love will prevail no matter what.

One of my favorite quotes from Brené Brown about courage is this: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” I think that sums up the spirit of “Loveland” quite well. Janie and Bryce are not fearless; they’re both scared at times. But they choose to prioritize their love over their fear. They choose to believe that they deserve happiness and respect no matter who they are or whom they love.

The acting in “Loveland” is impressive overall, especially considering that most of the cast are relatively unknown actors. Lauria brings a nuanced vulnerability to her portrayal of Janie, a young woman who wants to please her father but also wants to be true to herself and her feelings. Stgelais is equally compelling as Bryce, a sensitive and brave young man who refuses to be silenced or shamed. Resendez gives an understated yet powerful performance as Janie’s father, who struggles with his own prejudices but ultimately learns to accept and love his daughter.

The score and popularity of “Loveland” are relatively modest, compared to other blockbuster films. However, the movie has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics for its message of inclusivity and compassion. The cinematography, directed by Daniel Jolliff, captures the beauty of Colorado’s landscapes and contrasts it with the ugliness of bigotry and violence.

The filming process was not without challenges, as Walls faced some resistance from local authorities who were wary of the film’s content. However, Walls persevered by building relationships with community leaders and stakeholders, showing them that the film was not an attack on their beliefs but a celebration of love in all its forms.

In terms of evaluation, “Loveland” has won several awards at festivals such as the Idaho Horror Film Festival (Best Feature), the Golden Door International Film Festival (Best Drama), and the Red Dirt International Film Festival (Best Director). The movie has also been selected for screenings at various LGBTQ+ film festivals around the world.

One scene that I found particularly moving is when Janie dances with Bryce in a barn while he sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. The scene is both romantic and poignant because it shows how much they care for each other despite all the obstacles they face. It also highlights how music can bridge differences and bring people together.

As for gossip or criticism about “Loveland”, there haven’t been many controversies or negative reactions so far. However, some viewers may find the plot predictable or formulaic, or may wish for more explicit LGBTQ+ representation in the film. Others may argue that the movie sugarcoats or romanticizes the struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals, rather than highlighting the harsh realities of discrimination and violence.

Personally, I think that “Loveland” strikes a balanced and compassionate tone. While it doesn’t shy away from the challenges that Janie and Bryce face because of their identities, it also doesn’t dwell on their suffering or victimization. Instead, it emphasizes their agency and resilience, as well as their capacity to love and be loved.

In terms of production and editing, “Loveland” is not a big-budget or flashy film, but it doesn’t need to be. The simple yet effective storytelling, combined with the heartwarming performances and visuals, create a powerful emotional impact that lingers long after the credits roll.

Overall, I would highly recommend “Loveland” to anyone who loves movies that inspire hope and kindness. It’s a movie that reminds us that love is not just a feeling but a choice, a practice, a way of being in the world. It’s a movie that challenges us to be brave, to be vulnerable, to be open to new experiences and perspectives. And it’s a movie that invites us to dare to love ourselves and others despite our flaws and differences.

As Brené Brown has said: “Love is not something we give or get; it is something we nurture and grow.” Watching “Loveland” will definitely make you want to nurture your own love more intentionally, as well as appreciate the love around you more fully.
