Review

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the bustling city streets. The hustle and bustle of Brooklyn was at its peak, with people rushing to and fro, going about their daily business. It was a world of noise and chaos, where it was easy to feel lost in the crowd. But for one man, the sounds of the city were nothing compared to the voices he heard in his head.

“Monsters and Men” is a film that explores the aftermath of a police shooting from three different perspectives. The first is that of Manny Ortega (Anthony Ramos), a young father who witnesses the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white police officer. The second is that of Dennis Williams (John David Washington), a black cop who struggles with his own conscience after being pressured to cover up the shooting. And finally, there is Zyrick (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a promising young athlete who becomes involved in protests against police brutality.

From its opening moments, “Monsters and Men” grips you with its raw honesty and emotional intensity. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green has crafted a film that feels like an urgent call to action; one that demands we confront the ugly truths at the heart of our society. It’s not an easy watch, but it’s an essential one.

The film’s title comes from a quote by Edmund Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” This sentiment runs through every frame of “Monsters and Men,” as we see how easily people can become complicit in injustice when they are too afraid or too apathetic to speak out.

There are some powerhouse performances here, particularly from John David Washington as Dennis Williams. He brings an incredible range of emotions to his role – frustration, anger, guilt – but never overplays any of them. His scenes with his wife (Nicole Beharie) are particularly moving, as we see the toll that his job takes on their relationship.

Anthony Ramos also shines as Manny Ortega, imbuing his character with a quiet strength and determination. And Kelvin Harrison Jr. continues to prove himself as one of the most talented young actors working today, bringing a vulnerability and depth to his portrayal of Zyrick.

The film’s score, by Kris Bowers, is hauntingly beautiful, adding an extra layer of emotional resonance to the already powerful story. The cinematography, by Patrick Scola, is equally impressive; capturing the grit and beauty of Brooklyn with equal skill.

It’s worth noting that “Monsters and Men” was inspired by the killing of Eric Garner in 2014. This adds an extra layer of weight to the already devastating story; reminding us that these events are not just fiction – they are happening right now, every day.

In many ways, “Monsters and Men” feels like a companion piece to Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us.” Both films grapple with issues of police brutality and systemic racism in a way that is both unflinching and deeply empathetic. They are important works of art that demand to be seen.

As Hemingway famously said: “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” “Monsters and Men” reminds us that true nobility – the kind that demands we fight for what is right – can be found in all of us if we only have the courage to search for it.
