Review
There once was a movie that caused quite a stir, known as “Witchboard,” a film that made audiences purr. It tells the tale of a board that’s said to bring forth powers beyond our understanding, and the consequences thereof.
The film opens with Jim and his girlfriend Linda attending a party at Brandon’s house. While there, they come across an old Ouija board, which they proceed to use half in jest and half in earnest. What they didn’t realize is that this witchboard can open up doors to the other world.
Soon enough, strange things begin to happen around them: objects move on their own accord, strange apparitions appear, and voices issue from unexpected sources. They realize that they have unleashed something sinister into their midst.
As they attempt to figure out what is happening to them, Jim seeks out reluctant psychic Zarabeth who has been studying the occult. However, as she looks deeper into this board’s history and its usage she realizes the true darkness of what they’ve conjured.
It becomes evident that something malevolent has attached itself to Linda and will not leave her alone. Zarabeth tries her best to get rid of it but it keeps coming back with more fury than before.
The climax of the movie takes on a thrilling spin as Jim jumps head first into saving his precious girlfriend from certain death at the hands of this malevolent force. Can he stop this evil? Will he succeed? Or will Linda be sentenced forever by an unseen power?
The film stars Todd Allen as Jim, Tawny Kitaen as Linda and Stephen Nichols as Brandon. Alongside an outstanding cast with dazzling performances by Kathleen Wilhoite portraying ZaraBeth.
“Witchboard” was directed by Kevin S Tenney produced by Walter Josten & Jeff Geoffray which made its grand debut in 1986 and went on to receive rave reviews from audiences globally with gross earnings of over $7 million at the box office.
The film managed to do well despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. While some praised its ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, others criticized its lack of originality and weak script.
One thing’s for sure though; it has held up well over the years and still manages to frighten audiences with its chilling tale of horror.
The cinematography is superb, creating an eerie yet mesmerizing atmosphere that seems to pull viewers deeper into the movie. The special effects are impressive for its time, adding an extra layer of fear, making it even more haunting and unforgettable.
The dialogue between the cast is naturalistic and there is a level of believability in their characters especially Tawny Kitaen’s Linda who we see unravel before our eyes as she becomes possessed by a demonic entity. It is worth noting that her performance here garnered rave reviews from movie critics, cementing her status as a Hollywood heartthrob.
“Witchboard” is not just another run-of-the-mill horror movie that relies on jump scares alone. It has a solid plot, excellent acting alongside creative soundtracks that keep you hooked from start to finish.
Overall “Witchboard” has proven to be a classic staple for those who are into supernatural horror films. It put Kevin S Tenney on notice within Hollywood circles as one of the most talented young directors around his time and reaffirmed Tawny Kitaen’s up-and-coming status as one of Hollywood’s brightest actresses often seen in music videos for bands like Whitesnake.
In closing, if you’re looking for a spine-tingling, bone-chilling horror movie full of suspenseful twists that will keep you guessing what will happen until the end then look no further than “Witchboard.” A classic horror flick whose legacy continues to grow in legend today!
