Jakarta, City of Dreamers: A Captivating Film That Will Leave You Breathless
Indonesia’s remarkable capital city, Jakarta, has been the setting for many movies. However, none of them have captured the spirit of Jakarta like “Jakarta, City of Dreamers.” Directed by Fajar Nugros and produced by Starvision Plus and Legacy Pictures, this movie successfully explores Indonesia’s bustling and diverse capital city while telling a captivating story.
The storyline is about three young strangers named Nining (Laura Basuki), Deni (Rendy Ahmad), and Kinan (Kirana Larasati) who all share the same dream: to make it big in Jakarta. They all come from different backgrounds and have different aspirations, but they all want to succeed in the city that never sleeps.
Nining is a dancer who wants to be a pop star; Deni is a taxi driver who wants to become an actor, while Kinan is an ambitious employee of an advertising company. They all face numerous challenges as they try to make their dreams come true.
One of the characters’ most significant challenges is navigating through Jakarta’s traffic jams. The scriptwriters brilliantly use this challenge as a metaphor for Jakarta’s chaotic atmosphere where anything can happen.
This movie also highlights other problems that affect Jakarta such as pollution, corruption, and poverty. However, despite these challenges that exist in Jakarta society, the film manages to convey a sense of hope.
The movie showcases fantastic acting from its cast members. Laura Basuki offers an excellent performance as Nining, conveying both her vulnerability and strength effectively. Rendy Ahmad adds depth to his character Deni while Kirana Larasati delivers an outstanding performance as Kinan.
Furthermore, “Jakarta City of Dreamers” boasts some of the best cinematography ever seen in Indonesian cinema. The film captures the city’s many faces beautifully – from its skyline to its streets filled with people, each shot is a masterpiece.
The film’s music score, which was composed by Bemby Gusti, adds another layer of depth to the movie. The music perfectly captures the emotions and enhances the story’s tension at critical moments, making it a joy to watch.
“Jakarta City of Dreamers” received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It won the Best Original Soundtrack at the 2018 Indonesian Film Festival and was also nominated for Best Editing and Best Supporting Actress Award.
The movie also features a famous Indonesian comic named Denny Cagur who made an appearance in one of the film scenes. Furthermore, the film cast more than 1000 extras from Jakarta in different parts of the city to make it more authentic.
Despite its many strengths, some viewers have criticized “Jakarta City of Dreamers” for being too idealistic about Jakarta’s future. However, this criticism does not diminish the fact that it is one of Indonesia’s most captivating films in recent years.
In conclusion, “Jakarta City of Dreamers” is an excellent film that tells a compelling story while painting an accurate picture of Jakarta’s modern life. It explores themes that both Indonesians and non-Indonesians can relate to such as pursuing one’s dreams, love, and friendship amid adversity. The movie also showcases Jakarta’s unique character while highlighting its various social issues. If you want to experience the charm and diversity of Jakarta on-screen, you must watch “Jakarta City of Dreamers.”
