As I sat down to watch the movie “The Influence”, I had no idea what to expect. The trailer had piqued my interest, but as a Seth Godin fan, I knew better than to judge a book by its cover. And boy, was I in for a treat.
The movie tells the story of Alicia (played by Manuela Vellés), a successful writer who returns to her childhood home to help take care of her mother (Clara Segura) after she suffers a stroke. As she reconnects with her younger sister Sara (Maggie Civantos), Alicia begins to unravel the dark secrets of their past and uncovers some disturbing truths about their mother’s past.
From the get-go, the movie had me hooked. The storyline was engaging and suspenseful, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. But more than that, it was the way it was told that really impressed me.
Director Denis Rovira clearly understands how to build tension and create atmosphere. From the eerie music score to the haunting cinematography, every aspect of this movie was designed to keep you on your toes.
The acting was also top-notch across the board. Vellés delivered a standout performance as the troubled protagonist struggling with her own demons while trying to uncover those of her family’s past. And Segura’s portrayal of a woman haunted by her own dark history left me feeling equal parts sympathetic and unnerved.
But it wasn’t just the main cast that impressed me – even minor characters were fleshed out and given depth, making them feel like real people instead of just plot devices.
One scene in particular stood out to me as incredibly powerful – without spoiling anything, there’s a moment where Alicia confronts her mother about something she’s been hiding from her daughters for years.
