Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about a movie you probably haven’t heard of, but that will make you laugh, cry and feel all sorts of emotions. This is “My Awkward Sexual Adventure,” a Canadian comedy that hits all the right notes, directed by Sean Garrity and written by Jonas Chernick.
The storyline follows Jordan Abrams (Jonas Chernick), a sexually inexperienced accountant who gets dumped by his girlfriend Rachel (Sarah Manninen) because he’s too boring in the bedroom. Jordan decides to travel to Toronto to meet his ex-girlfriend and win her back with some newfound carnal skills. Along the way, he meets Julia (Emily Hampshire), a sex worker who agrees to teach Jordan everything she knows about sex for a fee.
The plot of the movie seems predictable at first glance: unexperienced guy looking for sexual expertise – we’ve seen it before. But this movie is different. The characters are well-developed, multidimensional, and relatable. You can’t help but feel empathy towards Jordan as he tries to navigate his newfound sexuality while struggling with his own identity.
The acting is fantastic. Jonas Chernick plays Jordan with such vulnerability and sincerity that you almost forget he’s an actor. Emily Hampshire gives us another outstanding performance as Julia; she’s confident yet vulnerable, tough yet tender-hearted.
The chemistry between Chernick and Hampshire is palpable onscreen. It’s rare to see such on-screen chemistry between actors that makes you root for their characters’ happiness.
This film showcases sex work in an entirely new light while challenging preconceived notions about masculinity and femininity. Instead of portraying it as something illicit or taboo, “My Awkward Sexual Adventure” shows us how sex work can be empowering for both parties involved.
The dialogue in this film is smart, witty, and sharp – it keeps you engaged from start to finish. One of my favourite quotes from the movie comes from Julia, who tells Jordan: “It’s not about the orgasm. It’s about the journey.”
The score and popularity of “My Awkward Sexual Adventure” are impressive. The music adds a playful, upbeat, and youthful vibe to the film, while also showcasing some great Canadian artists like Joel Plaskett Emergency.
Filming locations include recognizable landmarks in Toronto like The Gladstone Hotel and Kensington Market adding a distinct Canadian charm to the movie.
Speaking of awards, this movie received many well-deserved accolades – It won the Audience Award at the Calgary International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards.
The cinematography is effective in creating intimate moments between characters. The framing is close and personal; it allows you to feel like you’re part of their conversation.
Some of my favourite scenes in ‘My Awkward Sexual Adventure’ include Jordan learning how to dance with Julia, where we get a fun nod to ‘Dirty Dancing’, and later when they practice sensual massage techniques on each other, which is both playful and touching.
On a minor negative note, some people might find that there are parts of the movie that toe the line between quirky comedy and insensitive tropes. But overall, this film represents an honest and beautiful portrayal of self-discovery through sexuality.
To conclude, Sean Garrity’s direction made ‘My Awkward Sexual Adventure’ into an honest coming-of-age story set within an unconventional romance while Jonas Chernick’s writing provides a cleverly constructed narrative that feels cohesive while highlighting relatable themes throughout.
