Review

In the midst of all the blockbuster films with high budgets, it’s refreshing to stumble upon an indie film that can pack a punch. “The Borderlands” is one of those films.

The movie follows a team of Vatican investigators who are sent to a remote West Country church to authenticate miracles. They are tasked with checking whether the current priest, Father Crellick, has been faking supernatural occurrences. The group comprises of Deacon Gray (Gordon Kennedy), a technical expert; Mark (Aidan McArdle), a young and devout priest; and their leader Deacon (Robin Hill), an experienced investigator.

As soon as they arrive in the church, they encounter oddities and strange noises. A few creepy occurrences lead them to believe that there might be something more at play than just simple fraudulence.

Director Elliot Goldner expertly weaves together elements of horror and suspense throughout the film. We slowly get to know each character and feel invested in what happens to them as the plot advances.

One standout scene takes place early on when the investigators first arrive at the church. As they begin exploring, Mark hears something behind a door and decides to investigate. Suddenly, he is attacked by an unseen force which drags him across the room – leaving him screaming for help.

The cinematography is top-notch – with every frame carefully constructed to make you feel uneasy. The movie takes advantage of its remote location by maximizing the darkness and silence present in rural areas.

The dialogue between characters is realistic and effective – with each line delivering some sort of information that progresses the story forward. It’s obvious that Goldner spent countless hours perfecting each line in order to deliver his message effectively.

Despite being an indie film, “The Borderlands” was able to pull off stunning sound effects which add more depth and intensity to already suspenseful scenes.

The score, composed by James Gosling, does a fantastic job at letting us know when we should be feeling afraid and which scenes are meant to be taken seriously.

The film received mostly positive reviews for its originality, effectiveness, and lack of predictability. It has been compared to Paranormal Activity and the Blair Witch Project for its low budget but high-quality production.

“The Borderlands” was able to snag several nominations at the British Independent Film Awards, including best screenplay and best supporting actor for Robin Hill, who gave a standout performance as Deacon.

This horror film certainly isn’t for everyone. Its slow-burn approach may not be suitable for those looking for jump scares or gore. However, if you’re willing to give it a chance, “The Borderlands” has all the qualities of a great indie film – originality, effective storytelling, strong acting performances and immersive cinematography.

In conclusion, “The Borderlands” is an indie horror masterpiece that is definitely worth your time. Its unique blend of horror elements make it one-of-a-kind and sets it apart from other films in the genre. If you’re looking for something different from your usual blockbuster fare, this movie comes highly recommended.
